Other Plasma Instabilities

Drift Mirror Instability, driven by ion temperature anisotropy in high-beta plasma, creates large amplitude plasma waves which scatter energetic electrons (20-500 keV) into the loss cone. We currently study whether these energetic electron microinjections can form the source population for the Earth's radiation belts.
